I can hardly remember what I was thinking about when I was 18-19 years old. Mainly women to be honest. Also, Trying to be an emcee and putting tapes together by copying them on my own and printing covers at Kinko’s. Times were different then. People still bought music and you had to wait your turn. A demo was not packaged as nicely as it is now. It paid off to be “hungry.”
Listening to Versis new album iLLCANDESCENT takes me right back to those days, but a lot more professional, and a lot more prepared. lol Prior to hearing him rock at Fat Beats, I heard of Versis from a few other people, his show at Fat Beats showed a young dude standing right in the center of the stage and song for song lyrically mesmerizing the crowd. I was an immediate fan of his music. Upon finding out his age and the fact that he put together and is pushing this project on his own I was even more impressed.
When you think about it, some of your favorite groups and emcees were very young at their start (Blu, Common, ATCQ, NWA…etc). Youth energy is very important in hip-hop, Versis shows this energy while spitting dope, level headed lyrics that encourage and prove he’s truly aware of his hip-hop background.
These abilities drew ears and dope production from LA greats such as Dibia$e, and Exile, but VA’s own T. Hemingway (Another LA to DMV collab!) who produced the majority of the album steals the show on this one. “Thesis” & “Dig This” are SOLID songs.
Head over to Versis bandcamp page and pick up “iLLCANDESCENT.” I’m loving the sound that the younger emcees are bringing from LA right now.
